2008 Variations for Competitions
- All divisions select competition variations from the following lists. Division II & III competitors select a slow or fast tempo and indicate tempo on registration form. Tempo changes accepted only until May 25.
- All variations are recorded on official ABC CDs which will be sent to registrant upon receipt of their completed registration.
- Contestants in Divisions II proceeding to the final round MAY choose an alternate variation for the finals. Division III’s MUST perform a different variation for finals.
- All variations from the Ballet’s classical pas de deux unless otherwise listed.
DIVISION I | Ages 10 - 12 (Pre-competitive)
Select one musical excerpt from the following Ballets for the competition as recorded on ABC official CD. Competitor’s teacher is to choreograph the variation to be performed. Female variation is to be performed on or off pointe as determined by student’s teacher. If on pointe, contestant will be judged for readiness and technical ability for pointe work.
The following technical elements must be incorporated in the variation in one or more of the movement’s forms and in any phrasing combination. The variation is not limited to, but must include at least ten of the following:
- Glissade
- Pas de bourrée
- Jétè
- Assemblé
- Chainé turns
- Balancé
- Piqué
- Echappé
- First arabesque (piqué or relevé)
- Coupé, Ballonné
- Pas couru
- Passé
- Entrechat quatre
- Retiré

TRAINEESHIPS
Traineeships are awarded to competitors in Division III. Division III competitors who wish to be considered for a traineeship must indicate on their registration form which company they are interested in and must attend artistic directors’ presentations scheduled on Friday, June 6 at 7pm.
Students competing for traineeships must prepare, in addition to their classical variation, one contemporary or modern work to be performed in the final round of the competition. The work should be original and may be performed on or off pointe as the choreography requires. The selection must be no longer than 120 seconds and no less than 90 seconds in length. Competing student’s teacher is responsible for obtaining any and all required choreographer’s and/or musical releases and is responsible for the payment of any royalties.
Only competitors who have advanced to the finals are eligible to perform required contemporary piece during the final round.
