2008 INTERNATIONAL TEACHERS SEMINAR

“The Theory and Practice Of Teaching Ballet”

with Gilbert Mayer of the Paris Opera Ballet and School

April 4,5 & 6, 2008

We are pleased to present a new intensive 3-day seminar with Gilbert Mayer of the Paris Opera Ballet Company and School. Mr. Mayer, considered the world ambassador of the French school and one of today’s greatest teachers, will focus on teaching skills and the underlying methodology and technical understanding of imparting this knowledge. The Seminar is open to dance teachers, educators, coaches, historians, dancers, students and parents.

HISTORY

The very first professional dance academy was created by Louis XIV in 1661 in a small room in the Paris Louvre. The Paris Opera Ballet School, as it is known today, evolved from this academy. Through the course of its history, the Paris Opera has produced many dance legends such as Auguste Vestris, Marie Taglioni and Herald Lander. Rudolf Nureyev chose to spend his most prolific years there working with the company and specifically with Gilbert Mayer. Living legends such as Mikhail Baryshnikov have also been coached by Mayer.

PROGRAM

The daily plan will include technique, theory, demonstrations and discussion. Each day will begin with a Master Class (teachers may take or audit class). Following the technical class period will be in-depth sessions to discuss the pedagogical principles used.

The philosophy of the teaching method employed at the Paris Opera Ballet School, along with basic understanding of student development from the first year with class progression, placement and style, will be comprehensively covered, including:
