The American Ballet Competition has three competition divisions:
- DIVISION I - Ages 10-12 (Pre-competitive)
- DIVISION II – Ages 13-15 (Juniors)
- DIVISION III – Ages 16-20 (Seniors)
DIVISION I
- This division is for pre-competitors, ages 10 -12, and is held in one round with awards ceremony held on Friday, June 6, 2008.
- Division I pre-competitors will participate in a master class, pointe class and a one round competition and awards ceremony on Friday. Performance order is determined by age - youngest to oldest.
- All Division I participants may elect to depart after awards ceremony on Friday or stay on to participate in a master class for their level and observation of Division II & III competition on Saturday and Sunday.
- Variations: Division I competitors select one musical excerpt as listed under Competition Variations and as recorded on ABC’s official CD. The student’s teacher or coach is to choreograph an age-appropriate variation for the student to perform. The variation may be performed on pointe or in soft slipper and, if on pointe, will be judged for student’s ability and readiness to be working on pointe.
- Check-in for Division I is Thursday, June 5, 6:00-7:00 pm - New World School of the Arts-Dance Division, 8th Floor, Miami, FL Classes, coaching and competition will be held 9:00am-5:00pm. A detailed schedule of events will be e-mailed in advance and given to competitor upon check-in.
- Competition fee: $195.00. Includes all master classes, coaching (Friday only) and two tickets to all competition rounds and awards ceremonies June 6-8, 2008. Registration deadline is May 23, 2008.
DIVISIONS II & III
- Division II and III competitions are held in two rounds. Preliminary round is held on Saturday, June 7 and finals are held Sunday, June 8. Both divisions compete together.
- All participants, whether proceeding to the finals or not, will participate in master classes, coaching sessions (Saturday only). Finalists will have an additional coaching session on Sunday.
- Variations for both II and III are listed under Competition Variations. Division II may select one or two variations with second variation to be performed for final round. Division III must have an alternate variation for the Finals. Variation changes will be accepted only until May 23.
- Division II participants compete for scholarships and cash awards. Division III’s compete for company traineeships (elective), scholarships and cash awards.
- Check-in for all Division II & III participants is Friday, June 6 - 6:00 pm - 7:00pm, New World School of the Arts 8th Floor, Miami, FL. Classes, coaching and competition will be held 9:00am-9:00pm. A detailed schedule of events will be e-mailed in advance and given to each competitor upon check-in.
- Division II and III competition fee: $265.00. Includes all master classes, coaching sessions, lectures and two tickets to all competition rounds and awards ceremonies.
